True Copy Attestation
True Copy Attestation – A photocopy of an original document is certified as a genuine copy via the procedure of attestation. For official reasons, a true copy of a document is often needed to verify that it is real and wasn’t fake. Basically, a lawyer or a solicitor will verify the authenticity of the original papers before signing and stamping the photocopies and adding the words “I certify that this document is a genuine copy of the original.” Even when they are used or presented outside the UAE, the following papers often have their genuine copies attested:
- Passports.
- IDs
- Utility bills
- Tenancy contracts
- Application forms
- Academic documents
- Experience certificates
- Photos
In the UAE, lawyers, notaries public, or other authorities who issued the document typically certify true copies of personal documents. For instance, the authorities that issued a company document (such as a license, share certificate, commercial registry, etc.) can certify their true copy.
However, in some countries (such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, etc.), in order for a legal document to be valid, it must also be witnessed and stamped by a lawyer or a solicitor.

How is a genuine copy attested in the United Arab Emirates?
- This is a broad outline of the procedures involved in performing a genuine copy attestation in the United Arab Emirates. The process varies depending on the document.
- Step 1: Verify that the document you are using is authentic. Authorities or attorneys who are concerned cannot produce certified copies of copies.
- Step 2: Verify the type of true copy attestation needed. Should the organization that issued the document handle it, or should a lawyer??
- Step 3: Do not use colored paper when making a copy of the document; only use white paper.
- Step 4: Send the original document and a copy of it to a notary, attorney, or another appropriate official (depending on your needs) so they can certify the copy as a true copy.
- Step 5: A lawyer, notary, or other concerned official authenticates the original, stamps and signs the copy of the original, and adds a notation stating that the original was authenticated and the copy was made from the original.
